Although some could argue that mental health is very well treated, it’s been statistically proven that it's not that easy to get help. In America 1 in 5 adults are affected by mental illness in one way or another. A mental disorder is about the person suffering but also affects people in their environment, their friends, family and anyone close to them. Your illness can be so consuming and take away so much energy that even though they are suicidal they don't have enough to attempt the act. Suicidal teens have a variety of variables that could be possibly affecting them, however, at least two-thirds of teens that struggle with being suicidal typically have unhealthy relationships with their parents. Things such as lack of communication or a parent struggling with problems of their own such as alcoholism or mental illness of their own. Suicide has been a growing problem since the 1980s and ”Suicide is the third leading cause of death in the age group fifteen to twenty-four”. A large 80% percent of children who warned of suicide attempt, and while males have a larger group of people who complete suicide more females attempt. However the attempt and the completion of suicide aren’t always so close together. A person can be suffering and attempting for two years before being able to successfully reach completion.
The author William A. Darity, Jr. is an American economist. He's attended some of the top schools such as Massachusetts institute of technology, the London School of Economic and political science and brown university. This makes him a well-established author and very educated on the subject of mental illness. He went on to write the International Encyclopedia of the social sciences. The book was initially published in 1968 but a second edition was released containing completely new articles. Even though it’s Darity’s book, it contains writings from various scholars. This allows for common knowledge while including different opinions from various amounts of established people. Within all the seventeen volumes they cover many fields meaning they can pull information from various places. This source is reliable because there are so many sources going into this one book.
